Misinformation through whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts
What was shown: A photograph has gone viral with the claim that it shows a soldier of the Indian army in the line of duty. It is captioned — “Our jawans fulfill their duty even in -5 degree temperature, and we sleep in peace. They are the saviours of our country. Jai Hind Jai Bharat.” But the photo is not of an Indian army soldier. It is from a video that is available on YouTube and shows a surfer surfing Lake Superior in sub zero temperature.
What was shown: A video that shows police entering people’s homes by force and thrashing them with lathis went viral with the claim that a Hindu was thrashed in Pakistan for hoisting a saffron flag on his house. But the video does not depict atrocities on Hindus. It pertains to an incident that took place in Faisalabad in Pakistan’s Punjab province in 2013.
What was shown: A video that purports to show Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal intoxicated and slurring, while recording a Facebook Live video, is fake. The original video has been slowed down by
editing it to give Kejriwal the appearance of speaking
What was shown: A video of clashes between a group of people was shared claiming that it depicted “Islamic terrorism in West Bengal”. But the video is from Bangladesh and had been shared with different narratives earlier.
