viral lies: exposed

Misinformation through whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts

What was shown: A disturbing video that shows a woman seated on the floor with her wrists tied together and undergoing the ritual has gone viral with a claim that it shows a Hindu woman forcibly converted to Islam in Kerala. The video was earlier too, passed off with several such false claims, but it is from Bangladesh and shows exorcism being performed.

What was shown: Photos of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor holding cash during his visit to the Connemara market in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, last week are being shared online with a claim that he was bribing his constituents to attend the gathering. But Tharoor had tweeted the same photos, saying that the fisherwomen of Puthiyathura had pooled their earnings and handed him a donation towards his election deposit.

What was shown: A horrific video of a group of people brutally flogging a man with sticks was widely shared. It is being claimed that they are BJP workers, who are beating a Muslim in Gurugram and asking him to go to Pakistan. But police say that there is no Hindu-Muslim angle to the crime. The accused and the victim both are Hindus. Also, this has nothing to do with any political party.

What was shown: Along with this message, a photograph of Priyanka Gandhi has been shared widely on social media. She is seen bearing a cross, implying that she is actually a Christian and is simply masquerading as a Hindu. But the image has been photoshopped.
