Misinformation through Whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake Whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts
What was shown: A photograph of Rahul Gandhi with a black eye is circulating on social media with the claim that the Congress President was thrashed in his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi. But the image is photoshopped.
What was shown: An image of Taimur Ali Khan, sporting a T-shirt with a ‘NaMo Again’ imprint, is circulating on social media. But it is a photoshopped image and in the original image, Taimur’s T-shirt does not have a ‘NaMo Again’ imprint.
What was shown: “Bengal has now become a hub for Bangladeshi intruders (terrorists) and Rohingyas who haven’t even let off central forces. This video needs to reach the Election Commission. Share it as much as you can.” This caption has been widely used to circulate a video on social media where a few men can be seen seated inside a van and bleeding profusely as the police attempt to stop a mob from attacking the vehicle. But this is related to a road accident that took place in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri.
What was shown: “Information received through RTI reveals that, on an average, Rs 80 lacs are paid to the beautician each month for makeup of our PM,” is a claim attached to a video viral where Prime Minister Modi can be prepping for what looks like a photo shoot. But it has been picked from the video showing the making of PM Modi’s wax statue in Madame Tussauds, Singapore.
