Viral lies: exposed

Misinformation through whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts

What was shown: Images of bearded men breaking the Vidyasagar statue are being shared with the claim that they are TMC workers who are destroying the statue. But it was found that the images pertain to an incident when artefacts in Iraq were destroyed by ISIS terrorists.

What was shown: A photo of actor Sanjay Dutt wearing a skull cap and sitting in front of a lavish Iftar spread, is viral on social media, with claims that the actor has converted to Islam. But the framed image of Mecca stood out, as did Dutt’s skull cap. So, this was just a photoshopped image.

What was shown: “Real Name – Mohammad Nisar Orange T-shirt, Tilak on Forhead. Now you can understand many things. You can also connect this to the so called “Bhagwa Goons” doing Violence” — many people shared this caption with a video of a man dressed in a saffron T-shirt being questioned by the police. There are many hints in the video itself that suggest that it does not depict the aftermath of the violence at Kolkata’s Vidyasagar College. But is, in fact, of clashes that had broken out between BJP and JMM workers outside a polling booth in Jharkhand.

What was shown: A picture that shows Mamata Banerjee greeting former West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu with a gesture which resembled ‘adab’ is being shared with the claim that Banerjee has adopted her mother’s religion – Islam. But both these claims are untrue.
