Viral lies: exposed

Misinformation through whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts

What was shown: A disturbing video showing a man and a woman in bloodied condition is being circulated on social media with the claim, that siblings were beaten up after the brother of the girl resisted ‘people belonging to the peaceful community’ from sexually assaulting her. The term ‘peaceful community’ is used derisively to refer to the Muslim community. The slogan “Jaago Hindu Jaago” in the claim suggests that the victims were members of the Hindu community. But both parties are Muslim. The claim that there was an attempt to rape, is also false. There was a fight between children and elders got involved.

What was shown: A photograph of a collapsed bridge was shared with the claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated this bridge just three months ago. “Planned by then CM Modi, inaugurated by PM Modi, Jamnagar-Junagarh highway bridge collapsed within 3 months of inauguration!” But the bridge was more than 50 years old and was not inaugurated by PM Modi.

What was shown: An incident where a man was offering namaz was falsely shared as a Muslim in India putting the life of passers-by in jeopardy. But the video is of a busy road in Malaysia and not India.

What was shown: An image of a man surrounded by children was shared with the claim that he is a Rohingya Muslim who has no food to eat or clothes to wear but has three wives and eight children. It further claims that the man also has a mobile phone worth Rs 29,000. But there was a fire in an asylum Darul Hijrat. These people were sitting in a corner and the man is a father of two. His wife and son were hurt in the fire. The phone that you see in his hand was given to him by a trust when they were serving food.
