Misinformation through whatsapp forwards —videos and photos — spreads like wildfire. Here is our compilation of fake whatsapp videos that went viral and the reality behind these distorted facts

What was shown : a disturbing video of a man trying to commit suicide by touching a live tranformer is being shared on social media with the false claim that he is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) volunteer taking the extreme step in protest against the recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The 28-second clip shows the man attempting to take his life by holding a transformer’s high -tension terminal. BOOM found that the man in the viral video is not a BJP volunteer and the incident is not related to Citizenship Amendment Act.

What was shown : a disturbing picture from bangladesh showing a man eating leftover food from an open gutter is viral on social media as Uttar Pradesh .The image, where a man can be seeing eating from a pile of waste food bluids a narrative around how India is suffering from extreme poverty, casteism and labour exploitation. One of the viral tweet reads, ‘’periyar was forced to feed on leftovers from streets, he was denied of meal because he was a shudra in kashi, Uttar Pradesh(1940) A shudra labour feeding on leftovers from a religious ceremony in Uttar pradesh (2019)75 years of independence “. Kashi is officially called Varanasi and is significant hindu piligrimage site. The same image has been viral on Facebook with a similar narrative. BOOM was able to ascertain that the photo is not from Uttar pradesh . A logo of bangladesh police can be seen on the vehicle parked beside the pavement.

What was shown:  social media posts claiming fake currency notes were seized from the car of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) supporter in Gujarat are misleading as the post combines two separate incidents not related to the organisation. A set of three images showing a police press conference along with stacks of 2000 rupee counterfeit notes is going viral on Facebook with a claim that it shows fake currency seized in Gujarat. The caption accompanying the photographs is in Hindi translates to : “store house of fake currency was seized in Gujarat .This secretly hidden treasure of fake news was found in the car of honest and dedicated Sangh supporter Ketan Dave.

What was shown : A disturbing video of two traffic cops being thrashed by a group of men in Delhi has resurfaced on social media with a misleading communcal narrative. The video shows men wearing skull caps kicking and slapping two cops .Sources founfd that the incident happened in Delhi’s Gokulpuri area in 2015,when cops were beaten up by a group of fining a vehicle after they flouted traffic rules. It has been captioned as, “Muslims beat up cops who issued a challan to them.
