Every year on August 29, India celebrates National Sports Day to honour the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. Known as one of the greatest athletes the country has ever produced, Dhyan Chand played a key role in securing three Olympic gold medals for India in field hockey (1928, 1932, and 1936). His unmatched skill with the hockey stick earned him the nickname “The Wizard of Hockey.” The day is also a reminder of the importance of fitness, discipline, and sportsmanship in our lives. Schools, colleges, and communities mark the occasion with matches, fitness drives, and events to promote a healthier lifestyle.

For Delhiites, this day is more than just a date on the calendar. The city offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy different sports, whether you want to play for fun or take it up more seriously. If you are looking to make the most of National Sports Day, here are five clubs in Delhi where you can experience the joy of sports.

Delhi Gymkhana Club

One of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in the city, the Delhi Gymkhana Club is known for its sprawling sports facilities. From tennis and squash to billiards and swimming, members have access to multiple options. The lush green cricket ground is also a favourite among players. Even though the membership is exclusive, the club has set the standard for sports culture in Delhi.

Delhi Golf Club

For those who enjoy open spaces and precision sports, the Delhi Golf Club near India Gate is a great choice. Spread across a large green expanse, the club offers an excellent golf course that attracts players from across the country. It has also hosted several national and international tournaments. Beyond golf, the club provides a peaceful escape from the city’s chaos, making it a unique place to celebrate National Sports Day.

Siri Fort Sports Complex

Located in South Delhi, Siri Fort Sports Complex is a hub for professional and casual players. Built for the 1982 Asian Games, it is managed by the Sports Authority of India. The complex offers badminton, squash, basketball, tennis, swimming, and even skating facilities. Many top-level tournaments and training sessions are organised here. For Delhiites looking for affordable yet world-class facilities, Siri Fort is one of the best choices.

Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA)

For tennis fans, DLTA near RK Khanna Stadium is a well-known landmark. It has hosted national and international tennis tournaments, including Davis Cup ties. The association offers training and coaching for young players and has excellent courts for practice. Visiting DLTA on National Sports Day is a great way to celebrate the sport while also watching some of India’s rising tennis stars in action.

Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

What better way to celebrate the day than at the stadium named after the hockey legend himself? Located near India Gate, the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium is one of the top hockey grounds in the country. It has hosted several important matches, including the Hockey World Cup. On this day, stepping inside the stadium not only gives you a glimpse of India’s sporting history but also inspires you to respect and enjoy the game that gave us our “wizard.”
