300 rolls of banned Chinese manjha seized in Delhi, two arrested

Police have arrested two persons and seized 300 rolls of banned Chinese manjha from them. Selling Chinese manjha and using is illegal, a police official said.

He said the arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Faizan, aged 22, from the Jama Masjid area, and Yaman, aged 19, from Lal Kuan.

According to a senior police officer, the authorities received information about two people engaged in the illegal sale and purchase of nylon-based Chinese manjha.

Acting on this tip-off, a raid was conducted near Outer Ring Road, Sarai Kale Khan, where the accused were expected to be present with a consignment of the banned string, he said.

During the operation, the police successfully apprehended the two suspects and found them in possession of five cartons containing a total of 300 rolls of the banned manjha, he added.

Upon interrogation, Mohammad Faizan revealed that he had acquired the cartons from a supplier named Jahangir, based in Sadar Bazar, Meerut. The intention was to deliver these prohibited goods to Yaman.

In 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had imposed a ban on Chinese manjha in Delhi due to its potential harm to both people and animals. The sharp string posed a serious risk of cutting through their skin.

Furthermore, in February of the current year, the Delhi High Court instructed the city police’s crime branch to investigate the manufacturing, sale, purchase, and storage of Chinese synthetic manjha in the markets and shops across the city used for kite flying.

The recent arrest and recovery are a part of the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade of such hazardous materials and protect public safety.
