A routine traffic check in Moti Nagar, West Delhi, resulted in the seizure of 500 sniper rifle bullets being transported on a motorcycle, according to the police on Monday.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when traffic police signalled a motorcyclist to stop, but instead of complying, the rider sped off, prompting a chase, said a senior officer involved in the investigation.
“During the pursuit, the rider abandoned the motorcycle near a traffic stop and fled,” the officer added.
Upon searching the motorcycle, the police discovered a bag containing 10 boxes with 500 live cartridges of 7.62 calibre. Moti Nagar police were alerted, and the bullets were seized, according to the officer.
An FIR has been filed under the Arms Act, and several teams have been formed to track down the suspect. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and retracing the suspect’s route,” the officer said.
Another senior officer, speaking anonymously, explained that 7.62 cartridges are typically used in AK-47s, self-loading rifles (SLRs), light machine guns, and sniper rifles.
“These bullets have a pointed design, causing a small entry wound but inflicting maximum damage upon exit,” the officer added.
He added that the recovery of such ammunition is concerning and assured that the suspect would be apprehended soon, as each bullet is marked with a batch number. (With inputs from PTI)
