The national capital has seen a spike in burglary cases, which have increased by 23 per cent in comparison to last year, according to data shared by Delhi Police.
Police sources attribute this rise to two main factors: an increase in the involvement of minors and juveniles in such crimes, and heightened public awareness leading to more residents filing complaints.
As per the Delhi Police‘s crime statistics, a total of 5,438 burglary cases have been reported this year until August 15, marking a 23.9 per cent increase from 2023, during which 4,389 burglary cases were reported in the same period. In 2022, 3,394 such cases were reported by August 15.
The data also revealed that 6,916 burglary cases were reported in 2023 and 6,189 in 2022. Of these, 1,764 cases were solved in 2024, and 1,397 were solved in 2023.
However, cases of house theft have dropped by 13 per cent, with this year’s tally at 11,944 compared to 13,863 in 2023, until August 15. In 2022, 9,318 cases of house thefts were reported during the same period. Throughout 2023, 2,164 cases of house thefts were reported, and 18,020 in 2022.
Motor vehicle theft cases have also decreased this year, with 23,794 reported until August 15, reflecting a 2.88 per cent decline. In 2023, a total of 24,500 motor vehicle thefts were reported, compared to 22,681 in 2022, by August 15. Overall, 40,045 motor vehicle theft cases were reported last year, and 38,248 in 2022.
Official sources point to the involvement of minors and juveniles as a significant reason for the increase in burglary cases in Delhi. A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that gangs often recruit minors for these crimes, as they are less likely to be caught and can easily secure bail, allowing them to re-offend.
Additionally, the official noted that greater public awareness has led to more burglary cases being reported. The Delhi Police consistently advises residents to use interlocking systems instead of traditional locks and to keep their house lights on, even when away.
