A Delhi Traffic Police constable was injured allegedly after being hit by a car whose driver attempted to flee during a drunken driving check in the Janakpuri area, an official said on Sunday.
The police have seized the vehicle and apprehended the accused driver, Nilesh Kumar, a resident of Dwarka’s Bagdola area in Delhi, police said.
The incident took place on Saturday evening near Bharti College on Lal Sai Marg when traffic personnel were conducting routine checks to curb drunken driving, he said.
The traffic team, comprising Sub-Inspector Gurdeep Singh and Constable Mohan Pal, signalled a car to stop on suspicion. However, the driver allegedly tried to escape and, in the process, rammed the vehicle into the constable, police said.
“The constable was hit head-on and fell onto the bonnet of the car before being thrown onto the road after a few metres,” a senior police officer said.
The police have seized the offending vehicle and issued a challan under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, including drunken driving, dangerous driving, jumping a red light and misbehaviour, the officer said.
Police said further legal action will be taken based on the complaint of the traffic staff.
The injured constable received medical treatment, they added.
