A 19-year-old man, who allegedly exploited access to his former employer’s mobile phone and bank account to carry out 21 unauthorised UPI transactions amounting to Rs 9.49 lakh, was arrested by the Delhi Police, an official said on Wednesday.

The accused, Abhishek Singh, was arrested from Surajpur in Greater Noida following a detailed analysis of banking, UPI and e-commerce transactions, the officer said.

According to police, a complaint was received from Abhay Nagar after Rs 9.49 lakh was allegedly debited from his bank account through 21 unauthorised UPI transactions between March 9 and April 15.

An e-FIR was registered and an investigation was launched. Police said analysis of the transaction trail, UTRs, beneficiary and merchant details, e-commerce orders, mobile numbers and delivery information revealed that Rs 1.19 lakh of the cheated amount had been used for online purchases between March 24 and April 10.

“The purchases, including bags, suitcases and clothing, were made under the fictitious identity using a mobile number linked to the accused,” the officer said.

Technical and field verification established that the identity and mobile number were connected to Singh, who had previously worked at the complainant’s shop. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he had gained access to the complainant’s mobile phone on various pretexts and used it to make online purchases using the bank account linked to the device.

Police said further investigation is underway.
