Delhi reports over 5,500 kidnapping and abduction cases in 2024: NCRB

Delhi recorded 5,580 cases of kidnapping and abduction in 2024, marginally lower than the 5,715 cases registered in 2023, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data 2024.

The national capital reported 5,641 such cases in 2022, the data showed.

Despite the slight decline, Delhi continued to report the highest rate of kidnapping and abduction cases among all states and Union Territories at 25.5 cases per lakh population in 2024 — significantly higher than the national average of 6.8.

The NCRB data estimated Delhi’s mid-year projected population at 218.8 lakh in 2024.

The chargesheeting rate in kidnapping and abduction cases in the national capital stood at 8.5 per cent during the year, lower than the all-India average of 30.9 per cent, according to the report.

Among Union Territories, Chandigarh recorded 181 cases, while Jammu and Kashmir registered 530 such incidents in 2024.

Across the country, a total of 96,079 kidnapping and abduction cases were registered in 2024, compared to 1,13,564 cases in 2023 and 1,07,588 in 2022, the NCRB figures showed.
