Delhi Police apprehended two individuals, including a former employee of a retired DRDO scientist, for allegedly robbing Rs two crore in cash and gold ornaments at knifepoint from the scientist’s home in Rohini, Delhi, officials said on Monday.
The robbery occurred on October 18 at approximately 12:50 pm in the Prashant Vihar area, when five men forcibly entered the scientist’s residence while posing as courier personnel, according to a senior police officer.
The arrested suspects are Jasmeen Singh alias Gifty (42) and Gaurav Kawatra (36), the former employee who provided information to the robbers. The officer stated that further investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
At the time of the incident, the scientist and his wife were at home. One of the robbers approached the scientist on the stairs, pretending to deliver paperwork, then forced him inside, covered his mouth, and threatened him with a knife while demanding cash related to his son, the officer reported.
The intruders restrained the couple, searched both floors of the house, and stole gold and cash before locking them inside, the officer added.
The police filed an FIR and initiated an investigation. They reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which revealed images of the suspects.
Although the robbers concealed the motorcycle’s registration number, police were able to identify the number plate on the front of the vehicle by tracing their route through the footage. The officers also noted that the suspects’ faces were captured in one of the recordings, which helped them identify and track the suspects to Karol Bagh.
Additionally, the team recovered Rs 10.15 lakh in cash, Rs 2.89 lakh frozen in a bank account, and a newly purchased mobile phone valued at Rs 1.38 lakh.
