An altercation, triggered when a man checked his wife’s call records over suspected infidelity, escalated into a fistfight and in a fit of rage, his wife then sat on his chest and strangled him to death with her dupatta on Thursday, police said.
Police said Alisha, 20, allegedly killed her husband, Mustakeem alias Sahil, at their residence in Rashid Market in East Delhi’s Jagatpuri and has been arrested.
According to police, a PCR call was received at Jagatpuri police station around 3:52 am regarding a woman allegedly strangling her husband.
A police team rushed to the spot and found Mustakeem unconscious.
Police said he was taken to Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said based on a complaint lodged by the deceased’s mother, an FIR under relevant provisions of the BNS was registered, and an investigation was launched.
During the probe, police examined the crime scene, recorded witness statements and analysed evidence. A senior police officer said sustained interrogation of Alisha led to her confession.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that her husband had taken her mobile phone during the night to search for evidence as he suspected her of being involved in an extramarital relationship, triggering a heated altercation between the two.
Police said Alisha claimed that Mustakeem assaulted her during the quarrel, after which she, in a fit of rage, strangled him with her dupatta.
Police said shortly after the incident, the deceased’s mother entered the room, prompting Alisha to flee from the house.
Acting on leads, police traced and arrested her from the gurdwara where she hid to evade arrest.
Police said the dupatta allegedly used in the crime has been recovered and seized as the weapon of offence, and further investigation is underway.
