A 19-year-old Delhi University student was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of students in front of Aryabhatta College on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Nikhil Chauhan, a resident of Paschim Vihar, was pursuing a BA (Hons) in Political Science from the School of Open Learning.

According to the police, a group of approximately four youth on motorcycles arrived outside the college gate and attacked Chauhan, stabbing him in the chest. The police were alerted by Charak Palika Hospital, where Chauhan was rushed for treatment but was declared brought dead.

Police said that initial investigations revealed that a student from the School of Open Learning had previously misbehaved with Chauhan’s girlfriend in college. When Chauhan confronted the harasser, an argument ensued, leading to threats and a physical altercation. The accused student, along with three accomplices, allegedly planned the revenge attack, resulting in Chauhan’s tragic death.

The police have identified the suspects and are examining CCTV footage from the crime scene to establish the sequence of events. Special teams have been formed to apprehend the culprits, who were seen fleeing on motorcycles.

A case has been registered, and after completing the post-mortem examination, the victim’s body will be handed over to his family. Chauhan leaves behind his parents and two brothers. In addition to his studies, he worked part-time as a model and appeared in music videos.

Expressing condolences, Delhi University PRO Anup Singh Lather called the incident unfortunate and tragic, emphasizing that the college should be a place of learning and career development. He extended his prayers for Chauhan’s soul and offered support to his grieving family.

Reacting to the news, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj took to Twitter, expressing his concern about the deteriorating law and order situation in the city. He questioned the actions of the Lieutenant Governor, who holds authority over public order, land, and the police in the national capital. Bharadwaj criticized the perceived lack of fear among criminals and accused the Delhi Police of filing false cases against political parties while protecting certain individuals.

The incident has sparked a debate on the overall security and safety of students in Delhi and the role of law enforcement authorities in maintaining order and preventing such tragic events. (With inputs from PTI)
