The Delhi Police were on their toes throughout the year, dealing with many instances of sensational crimes. While some were easy to solve, many of these cases are bound to have given the law enforcement agency several sleepless nights.

South Delhi triple murder

On December 4, 2024, a horrific triple murder shocked the residents of Devli village in South Delhi. Rajesh Kumar Tanwar, a retired armyman, his wife Komal, and their daughter Kavita were found brutally murdered in their home. Their son, Arjun Tanwar, a promising 20-year-old state-level boxer, was arrested shortly after for the brutal killings.

Police investigations revealed a chilling motive: a strained family dynamic. Arjun allegedly felt neglected and believed his parents prioritised his sister’s well-being over his own. This, coupled with a past incident where his father had reportedly disciplined him in front of relatives, fueled Arjun’s resentment. Police recovered the murder weapon, a knife believed to have belonged to his father, and a blood-soaked sweatshirt from Sanjay Van, where Arjun had disposed of the evidence.

Diwali night double murder

On Diwali night, a family gathering in East Delhi’s Farsh Bazar turned tragic when two assailants opened fire, killing a 40-year-old man, Akash Sharma, and his 16-year-old nephew, Rishabh. Sharma’s 13-year-old son was critically injured in the crime that took place on November 1.

The attack, captured on CCTV footage, stemmed from an unresolved debt. Sharma, a property dealer with a criminal past, had allegedly hired a teenager to carry out a shooting earlier. When Sharma reneged on the payment, the teenager, with a criminal record, hired a hitman for Rs 1.5 lakh to execute the killing.

The police have apprehended the juvenile, who visited the family days before the incident on the pretext of offering sweets. The police arrested an active member of the Hashim Baba – Rashid Cablewala gang after a brief encounter in the Jyoti Nagar area.

Doctor shot dead in chamber

On September 21, a 17-year-old boy, accompanied by another juvenile, sought treatment from Dr Javed Akhtar at Nima Hospital in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj. A dispute arose over the medical bill, leading to a heated argument.

Ten days later, the boy returned to the hospital for a follow-up but was denied treatment by the hospital staff, including Akhtar. This rejection fueled his anger and a desire for revenge.

On October 3, at around 1:30 AM, the teenager, armed with the pistol, entered Dr Javed’s cabin and shot him dead. Presently, all three of the accused are in police custody. It is through an Instagram post that the police were able to track the accused down.

Gym owner’s death

On October 17, Delhi Police’s Special Cell and Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a joint operation in Mathura, resulting in the arrest of Yogesh, a sharpshooter linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi and Hakim Baba gangs. Yogesh is the prime suspect in the murder of Nadir Shah, a Delhi gym owner, who was gunned down outside his gym in Greater Kailash on September 12.

The arrest followed a brief shootout. When police approached Yogesh near Baad railway station, he opened fire. Officers returned fire in self-defence, wounding Yogesh in the leg. Police recovered a firearm, ammunition, and a motorcycle from the scene.

The murder of Nadir Shah had been linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Rohit Godara, an associate of Goldy Brar, a close confidante of Lawrence Bishnoi, had claimed responsibility for the killing on social media.

Panchsheel Park murder

On November 27, a 64-year-old businessman named Rohit Kumar was found brutally murdered at his home in Delhi’s upscale Panchsheel Park area. Kumar was discovered lying unconscious in a pool of blood by his son, who resides in a separate room within the same building.

Delhi Police made an arrest on December 1. Abhay Sikarwar, a 25-year-old man hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was apprehended by the South District Police. Sikarwar was apprehended in Moti Nagar, where he was employed as a cook.
