Independence Day: Two individuals, including a Delhi traffic police officer, sustained injuries from Chinese ‘manjha’ in separate incidents in northeast Delhi on Thursday, according to officials.

Both injured individuals are now reported to be in stable condition.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Surendra, who is assigned to the Punjabi Bagh Circle, was hurt by the kite string while heading to duty, a senior police officer said. The 47-year-old officer, a resident of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, was struck by a manjha near Yamuna Vihar in Bhajanpura. He went to a nearby hospital on his own and has since been discharged and is stable.

In a separate incident, a 34-year-old man suffered serious injuries from a ‘Chinese manjha’ while riding a scooter with his wife near Signature Bridge in northeast Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey reported that at 2:20 pm, they received a call about the manjha injury in the New Usmanpur police station area.

The injured man, identified as Himanshu, a garment dealer from Than Singh Nagar, was en route to Khajuri Khas when the accident occurred on Independence Day. A case is being registered, and an investigation is underway.

Delhi has outlawed the use and sale of Chinese manjha, which consists of glass-coated synthetic strings used for kite flying.

A senior police officer said earlier this month that there are strict instructions to file FIRs and arrest individuals involved in the sale of Chinese manjha.

“Such kite strings are completely banned, and teams are working tirelessly to apprehend those involved in their distribution and stocking,” the officer added. (With inputs from PTI)
