A 24-year-old man was apprehended and 424 reels of banned Chinese manjha were seized after Delhi Police busted an alleged illegal storage and supply racket in the Nabi Karim area of central Delhi, an official said on Thursday.

The accused, Wasim Raza, a resident of Nabi Karim, was apprehended on Wednesday during a raid following a tip-off about the illegal storage and sale of the banned kite string, police said.

The police team intercepted Raza while he was carrying a blue plastic sack containing four packed reels of banned Chinese manjha. During interrogation, he disclosed the location where a larger stock had been concealed.

“Acting on his disclosure, the police searched a premises in Delhi’s Laxman Puri and recovered seven cartons containing 424 packed reels of banned Chinese manjha bearing various labels,” the official said.

An FIR has been registered at Nabi Karim and further investigation is underway.

Police said the drive against the illegal trade was launched in view of recurring incidents in which banned Chinese manjha has caused fatal accidents and serious injuries to two-wheeler riders, pedestrians, birds and animals.

“The investigation is focused on identifying the source of procurement, the supply chain and other persons involved in the illegal trade,” the official said.

The accused’s previous criminal involvement is being verified, police added.
