A man allegedly died after jumping from the Shahdara flyover in the trans-Yamuna area on Thursday afternoon, as Delhi police attempted to arrest him for suspected links to a jailed gangster, police said.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Jakir, also known as Sonu, who had 10 criminal cases filed against him.

He was believed to be affiliated with a gang led by imprisoned gangster Irfaan, also known as Chhenu, in East Delhi, the police added.

Sonu, along with four other suspects – Afsar, Nadeem, Abid, and Shoaib – was apprehended at the Shahdara flyover while they were travelling in an SUV around 10:30 am on Thursday.

An officer explained that during the police inspection, Jakir attempted to escape and jumped from the flyover.

As he jumped, Jakir tried to grab a tree branch, but his grip slipped, causing him to fall onto the road below, resulting in critical injuries. The police rushed him to GTB hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, the officer added.

Authorities recovered an Austrian-made revolver with seven live rounds, two .30 bore pistols, and three locally-made firearms from the suspects.

The officer also mentioned that Sonu was reportedly taking anti-depressants, but this has not been confirmed yet.

Local police have been informed, and further investigation is ongoing, the officer added.
