Sword-wielding Nihangs attack juice stall worker over Rs 10 in Delhi

Two Nihang Sikh brothers were apprehended after one of them allegedly attacked a sugarcane juice shop worker with a sword following a dispute over payment of Rs 60 at the Ajmeri Gate side of New Delhi Railway Station in central Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at around 10 am near a sugarcane juice shop located close to the outer gate of the railway station, following which a PCR call was received at Kamla Market police station regarding a sword attack and seeking an ambulance

“The victim, a 35-year-old shop worker, sustained a deep cut injury on his left hand just above the wrist during the altercation,” police said in a statement.

The PCR staff immediately shifted him to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, where he was medically examined. His medico-legal case (MLC) has been prepared, and the nature of his injury has initially been kept under observation, it read.

The two accused, identified as Gagandeep Singh (21) and his brother Baljeet Singh (30), both residents of Jalandhar in Punjab, were apprehended at the spot by locals, police said

Both men were carrying swords at the time of the incident, the statement read.

According to the preliminary enquiry, the two brothers had travelled from Amritsar to Delhi by train and stayed overnight at Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib. They then reached the New Delhi Railway Station to board a train to Nanded in Maharashtra for a religious visit.

“The duo had stopped at the sugarcane juice shop and consumed two glasses of juice. A dispute broke out when the shop worker asked them to pay Rs 60, while they insisted on paying Rs 50,” read the statement.

The argument soon escalated into a quarrel. During the altercation, Gagandeep Singh allegedly took out a sword and attacked the shop worker, resulting in a deep lacerated wound on his left hand.

The incident caused panic in the area, following which locals called the police and overpowered both of them before handing them over to the police.

Police said appropriate legal action is being taken on the basis of the victim’s statement. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events.
