5-year-old dead, 1 injured as balcony of old house collapses in northwest Delhi

A five-year-old child was killed, and another was injured after a balcony of an old house collapsed in the Wazirpur area of northwest Delhi on Saturday, police said.

According to police, a PCR call was received at Bharat Nagar police station regarding a jhuggi collapse at JJ Colony.

A police team rushed to the spot and shifted two children to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where one child, identified as Divyanshu (5), was declared brought dead, while the other, Rinki (10), is undergoing treatment.

Crime Team and FSL officials inspected the spot and collected exhibits, police said, adding that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and investigation is in progress.

Locals said the incident occurred at around 11 am when some children were playing in a lane near the structure, and the balcony came crashing down.

“Children were playing in the gali near the old house when the balcony suddenly collapsed with a loud noise. Two children were trapped under the debris, triggering panic. Hearing the screams, some of us rushed to help and pulled the children out,” an eyewitness said.
