577 cases of MCC violations registered ahead of Delhi assembly elections

Over 570 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) have been registered so far ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, an official reported on Friday.

The cases were recorded between January 7, when the MCC came into effect, and January 23.

During this period, a total of 19,065 individuals were arrested under various legal provisions, including the Excise Act, as per an official statement.

In preparation for the elections, police have ramped up surveillance at border checkpoints and intensified crackdowns on illegal activities such as smuggling of arms, liquor, and drugs.

The Delhi Police has registered 577 cases of alleged MCC violations and confiscated 284 illegal firearms along with 394 cartridges, the statement added.

Additionally, 46,682 litres of liquor valued at over Rs 1.3 crore, 119.51 kg of drugs worth over Rs 20 crore, and more than 1,200 prohibited injections have been seized.

Law enforcement agencies have also confiscated Rs 5.29 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver, the statement noted.

Polling for all 70 Assembly seats in Delhi is scheduled for February 5, with counting of votes set to take place on February 8.
