The accused was assaulted by some locals after the incident and is currently in a hospital, police said.

An official stated that the police received information around 5:40 am on Wednesday regarding a priest, identified as Soni Ram, being beaten near Pusta, Sonia Vihar.

On arrival at the spot, the police team learnt that Ram had been shifted to JPC Hospital, while Sonu Bhatt — the accused — was thrashed by the public and rushed to Trauma Centre, Civil Lines, the officer said.

Ram was shifted to GTB Hospital later in the day but succumbed to injuries, they said.

A case under section 302 (murder) has been registered against Bhatt, who is still hospitalized, the officer said.

According to the officer, a preliminary investigation suggested that Bhatt is not in a “healthy state of mind”, and he was known to the deceased.
