On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of ‘conman’ Sukesh Chandrashekhar and his wife Leena Paul to the Mandoli jail in Delhi. The couple, who were running an extortion racket from the Tihar jail premises, had requested the court to shift them to a jail outside the national capital.
However, the Enforcement Directorate had opposed their plea. The agency stated that the couple wanted to move to another jail in a different city as they had intentions to restart the extortion racket, since the one in Tihar was exposed. The couple had denied these allegations and has informed the court that they want to move out of Tihar as they are facing life threats.
The presiding bench consisted of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia. The bench observed that the couple wanted to be moved from Tihar to any other jail, so the couple was transferred to Mandoli jail – a suggestion made by the ED.
Solicitor general S V Raju, who represented the agency, stated that Chandrashekhar had bribed jail officials to avail facilities for his illegal operation and more than 80 jail officials were providing him assistance.
However, senior advocate R Basant, appearing for the couple, stated that Chandrashekhar was compelled to pay money to the jail authorities as he was being tortured inside the jail and needed protection.
Born in bengaluru, Chandrashekhar was first arrested in 2007. , when he was 17, for allegedly cheating a businessman of Rs 1.15 crore. Currently, he is being investigated for more than 30 criminal cases by several state police organizations, CBI, ED and Income tax department. The ED is probing a Rs 200 crore money laundering case against him which also involves big names like actress Jacqueline Fernandes accused of complying with Chandrashekhar.
