The BJP on Thursday announced its candidates for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), with Rohini councillor Pravesh Wahi fielded for the top post in the civic body.
According to a statement issued by the party’s Delhi unit, Monika Pant has been fielded for the deputy mayor’s post and nominated Jai Bhagwan Yadav as standing committee member and Leader of the House, while Manish Chaddha has been named as a standing committee nominee.
The candidates represent different wards across the city, Wahi from Rohini (Ward 53-E), who is likely to win unopposed, Pant from Anand Vihar (Ward 206), Yadav from Begumpur (Ward 27) and Chaddha from Paharganj (Ward 82), it said.
The announcement, made under the direction of the party’s national leadership, comes at a time when civic issues such as sanitation, infrastructure and local governance continue to dominate public discourse in the capital.
The electoral college for this year’s mayoral election comprises 273 votes, including 249 councillors, 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and three Rajya Sabha members. A candidate will need 137 votes to secure victory.
Elections for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, and three Standing Committee members are scheduled for April 29, while nominations will close on Thursday at 5 PM.
The party leaders said the nominees bring grassroots experience from their respective areas and have been actively raising local concerns, positioning them as familiar faces for residents ahead of the elections.
