Delhi Police, earlier today, has denied permission to standup comedian Munawar Faruqui’s show that was scheduled for 28 August in Delhi. The central district police, in a report, has cited apprehension regarding the communal harmony in the area.
The show, which was going to take place at Dr SPM civic centre, Kedarnath Sahni auditorium from 2 pm to 9:30 pm, was objected to by Vishwa Hindu Parishad Delhi President Surendra Kumar Gupta. In a letter addressed to Delhi Police, Kumar warned of protests if the show takes place as per schedule.
Munawar Faruqui’s shows have been repeatedly cancelled on several occasions since his infamous arrest in 2021. In January last year, he was arrested with four others by Madhya Pradesh police after Eklavya Gaur, son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, complained that the comedian had made objectionable remarks about Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a show in Indore.
Last week too, Faruqui’s show was cancelled in Bengaluru at the last moment. However, Faruqui has stated that the show was cancelled owing to health reasons. But just a day after, the controversial comedian performed a show in Hyderabad amid heavy security, raising questions about his Bengaluru show being cancelled for “health” reasons.
The comedian had earlier participated in the reality show Lock Up, which was hosted by Kangana Ranaut, and had ended up winning the season with 18 lakh voters supporting him. Faruqui enjoys a large social media presence, with 4 million followers on Instagram. However, his political jokes in the past are heavily impacting his shows where he often performs crowd work to engage directly with his fans and audience.
