Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Delhi, have booked a case of alleged gold smuggling after recovering three capsules suspected to contain gold from a passenger who arrived from Jakarta, officials said on Monday.

According to Delhi airport Customs, the passenger, who arrived on Flight D7 182 from Jakarta on July 27, was intercepted by officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) after crossing the Green Channel on the basis of Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) profiling.

Officials said an X-ray screening of the passenger’s baggage did not reveal any suspicious objects. However, the passenger’s behaviour raised suspicion, prompting officers to take him to the AIU office for detailed questioning.

During sustained interrogation, the passenger allegedly admitted to having ingested three solid pieces of gold with a total gross weight of 744 grams.

The three oval-shaped capsules, suspected to contain gold paste, were recovered and sent for extraction of the suspected gold as per the prescribed procedure, Customs said.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
