Delhi: 397 cases of MCC violations lodged ahead of assembly polls

Delhi Police have registered 397 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the national capital between January 7 and 19, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, an official said on Monday. The MCC came into effect on January 7, marking the start of heightened enforcement measures to ensure a fair election process.

In this period, 14,183 people were arrested under various provisions, including the Excise Act, according to an official statement. Police intensified vigilance at border checkpoints and launched multiple crackdowns on illegal activities, including the smuggling of arms, liquor, and drugs.

The enforcement efforts led to the confiscation of 212 illegal firearms and 295 cartridges. Additionally, 36,223 litres of liquor worth over Rs 1 crore were seized, along with 74.86 kilograms of drugs valued at more than Rs 15 crore. Police also recovered over 1,200 banned injections during these operations.

Apart from these items, authorities seized Rs 3.09 crore in cash and 37.39 kilograms of silver, further highlighting their efforts to clamp down on violations that could influence the electoral process.

The police have ramped up operations to maintain law and order, deploying special teams and setting up surveillance in sensitive areas to ensure the smooth conduct of elections. These measures are aimed at deterring illegal activities and ensuring strict adherence to MCC guidelines.

Polling for all 70 assembly seats in Delhi is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set to take place on February 8. The ongoing enforcement actions demonstrate the authorities’ commitment to creating a secure and transparent environment for voters.
