Delhi airport operator DIAL on Tuesday announced the launch of a self-service mechanism, enabling passengers to drop off their luggage, collect tags, and print boarding passes to complete the check-in process more quickly.

The new quick baggage drop solution reduces the check-in process from one minute to just 30 seconds, according to DIAL (Delhi International Airport Ltd).

With this innovation, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has become the first in the country and the second globally, after Toronto Airport in Canada, to offer such a solution, the operator said in a statement.

The airport has installed around 50 Self-Service Bag Drop (SSBD) units across Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. These units currently support three airlines: Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express.

Previously, the check-in process took around one minute, with travelers bypassing check-in desks, printing boarding passes, and collecting baggage tags at common use self-service (CUSS) kiosks.

Now, with the new quick drop solution, passengers can skip boarding pass or biometric validation as these details are already available on the baggage tag, reducing the processing time to about 30 seconds.

“We have introduced the Self-Service Bag Drop Quick Drop Solution at Delhi Airport, setting a new standard for passenger convenience and efficiency in India. This initiative aims to leverage advanced technology to enhance the travel experience,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL.

Under the new mechanism, passengers collect and attach their luggage tags at CUSS kiosks upon arrival. After placing their bags onto the SSBD conveyor belt, the system opens the respective airline’s application with a single click. Passengers agree to the dangerous goods self-declaration form, and the SSBD system checks all relevant criteria and business rules defined by the airlines. Once verification is complete, the bag is automatically processed. (With inputs from PTI)
