Delhi Assembly Election 2025: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Om Prakash Sharma has once again won the Vishwas Nagar Assembly Constituency, with an impressive margin of 25,042 votes

This victory marks his fourth consecutive win in the constituency. Sharma’s dominance in Vishwas Nagar dates back to 2013 when he first emerged victorious, and he has since maintained his position through three consecutive elections in 2013, 2015, and 2020.

Despite strong competition, particularly from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, Sharma has held the seat for over a decade, making Vishwas Nagar a BJP stronghold.

Sharma secured 72,141 votes, defeating his closest rival, AAP’s Deepak Singhal, who secured 47,099 votes. Congress’ candidate, Rajiv Chaudhary, received 3,627 votes. Sharma’s huge victory margin in this election further solidifying his political stature and influence in the region.

Sharma’s stronghold and political journey

Vishwas Nagar, with a total of 1,96,044 voters—comprising 1,04,083 male voters and 91,953 female voters—has consistently favoured OP Sharma. Local residents attribute his enduring popularity to his support for industrial units operating within residential areas. Sharma has been credited with ensuring that these industries function efficiently without any interference from authorities, helping the local economy thrive. A factory owner, speaking on the condition of anonymity, praised Sharma for his intervention when issues arose, saying, “He is the sole reason why the factories and other industries are functioning efficiently, without any issues from authorities. Even when concerns arise from civic agencies or the police, he asks us to let him know.”

Sharma has built a reputation for being a political leader who remains closely connected to his constituents and responsive to their needs. During the election campaign, he confidently predicted a BJP victory. On February 6, Sharma told the media, “The exit polls are in favour of the BJP. Along with this, as a political worker, when we go to the field, we can sense that the BJP’s chief minister will be elected in Delhi.”

His words proved accurate, as the BJP emerged victorious in the election.

However, the campaign was not without its share of criticism. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, accused Sharma of neglecting the development of Vishwas Nagar. During the campaign, Kejriwal remarked, “Vishwas Nagar lagged behind in development because people here elected a BJP MLA. He kept fighting with us for 10 years. This time Vishwas Nagar will elect an AAP MLA.”

Kejriwal further criticised Sharma’s record in healthcare, particularly the lack of mohalla clinics in the area, saying: “Only three mohalla clinics have been built in Vishwas Nagar because you chose the wrong MLA.”

Political rise and legacy

Despite these attacks, OP Sharma’s stronghold has remained unshaken. His political career began in 2008 when he contested against Congress’ Naseeb Singh, who had maintained a hold on the constituency since 1998. Although Sharma lost that election, he increased the BJP’s vote share by 7%, from 33.92% to 41.01%. His rise continued in 2013 when he won the seat with a 38% vote share, despite the entry of AAP into the contest.

In the subsequent elections of 2015 and 2020, Sharma increased his vote share further, reaching 45.15% in 2015 and 52.57% in 2020, marking significant growth in his support base. These successes have made Sharma the only member of the opposition who has been able to retain his seat since 2013.
