Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Delhi health authorities have issued an advisory to enhance preparedness for potential health challenges posed by the Human MetaPneumoVirus (HMPV) and other respiratory viruses.
Dr Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services, held a meeting on Sunday with chief district medical officers and the state programme officer of IDSP to discuss measures to address respiratory illnesses in the city, according to an official statement.
Hospitals have been directed to report cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) promptly via the IHIP Portal. Strict isolation protocols and adherence to universal precautions for suspected cases have also been mandated.
To ensure accurate monitoring, hospitals must maintain proper documentation of SARI cases and lab-confirmed influenza cases. Additionally, they are required to stock essential medicines, including paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, and cough syrups for mild cases, as well as ensure the availability of oxygen.

The advisory follows reports of a rise in respiratory illnesses in China. However, data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO), as of January 2, 2025, indicate no significant surge in respiratory illnesses, the statement added.
