Delhi Budget 2026–27, tabled by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the Assembly on Tuesday, allocated Rs 3,942 crore to the power department, including Rs 3,500 crore for subsidy payments and Rs 200 crore for shifting overhead wires underground.

A Delhi Energy Conservation Fund to promote energy efficiency and conservation in the national capital is also proposed in the budget.

“With the allocation of Rs 3,942 crore for Power department, we will not only continue the power subsidy but also take Delhi towards energy self reliance through PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna and an incentive-based scheme for promoting solar power,” Gupta said in her budget speech.

The Delhi government fully subsidises monthly power consumption up to 200 units, while users consuming 201-400 units receive 50 per cent subsidy.

The government doubled the allocation for shifting overhead high-tension and low-tension wires from Rs 100 crore in 2025-26 to Rs 200 crore in the 2026-27 budget.

Last year, the budget allocation for the Power department was Rs 3,847 crore.

The Chief Minister said work has started to shift overhead wires underground in 28 streets of Chandni Chowk area, at an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore.

An allocation of Rs 200 crore has been made in this year’s budget for shifting HT/LT wires in other parts of the city. The move will not only enhance aesthetics of the areas but also help prevent accidents, she added.
