Delhi Elections 2025: Student volunteers aid elderly voters

Delhi Elections: In a heart-warming display of civic responsibility, underage students in Delhi have volunteered at various polling stations, offering valuable assistance to voters, particularly the elderly and differently-abled, in casting their votes.

The initiative by the State Election Commission (SEC) saw students from government schools taking various measures to ensure the comfort and convenience of the electorate, providing amenities such as drinking water, washrooms, and assistance for voters at the polling stations.

Clad in white t-shirts emblazoned with the Election Commission’s logo, these enthusiastic volunteers ensured a smoother and more inclusive voting process.

The students, aged 15 to 17, have been assigned to polling booths across the city under the guidance of school authorities and election officials.

According to a polling official at Rabea Girls Public School in the Ballimaran constituency, “The responsibilities of student volunteers include guiding voters to the correct polling rooms, assisting those with mobility issues, and ensuring that elderly and disabled individuals receive the necessary support to exercise their democratic rights with ease.”

“I feel proud to be part of this initiative,” said Tooba Noor, 16, a student from Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Zeenat Mahal. “Helping senior citizens and differently-abled voters has given me a deeper understanding of democracy and the importance of participation,” she said.

Alisha Mudassir, another student, shared, “Helping elderly voters reach the polling booths safely and guiding specially-abled voters has been an inspiring experience. It feels great to contribute to democracy in a meaningful way.”

Alfiya, 16, a student from SGHK Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School, Barakhamba, who was assigned to assist at Rabea Girls Public School in Ballimaran, said, “Many senior citizens came with determination to vote. Holding their hands and assisting them made me realise how important voting is for everyone. I feel proud to be part of this process.”

“Democracy is for all, and as young volunteers, we are ensuring that no one faces difficulty in casting their vote. Seeing their smiles after voting makes all our efforts worthwhile,” said Aditya Kumar, 17, a student from Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, West Patel Nagar.

Humaira, an 11th-grade student, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “We’ve learned a lot and had fun, too,” she said, adding, “We received two days of proper training from our school authorities for this.”

Election officials have welcomed the initiative, noting that the presence of young volunteers has significantly eased the voting process.

“Many elderly voters hesitate to come to polling stations due to accessibility challenges. But with the help of these students, we have seen a remarkable improvement in voter turnout among senior citizens and the differently-abled,” said an election officer at the polling booth in Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Zeenat Mahal, Ballimaran.
