The Delhi government is working on a scientific plan to connect Gaushalas with the Ridge forest, so that cows in the city live in natural settings instead of roaming on the streets, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday.

At an event held at Kishan Ganj Gaushala in North Delhi, Gupta said the government has also identified land for establishing new cowsheds in 13 districts across the city. Each of these Gaushalas will be equipped with biogas plants, solar plants and veterinary facilities.

Gupta announced that the Gaushala spread over one acre of land which houses around 2000 cows, will be shifted to one of the identified location in the district.

She said the new Gaushala will be spread over more than five acre land.

“We are working on a scientific plan to connect Gaushalas with wooded areas of the Ridge, so that cows can live freely in a natural setting,” she added.

The chief minister also highlighted her government’s commitment to cow welfare, stating that the BJP-led government had released a pending grant of Rs 20 crore for Gaushalas within a week of its formation last year, and an additional Rs 24 crore grant has been released this year.

Gupta highlighted various other initiatives of her government, saying earlier there were no biogas plants in the city that caused cow dung to be washed down the drains and mix with the Yamuna water. The government is planning to set up six biogas plants to handle the 1,500 tons of cow dung generated in Delhi.

An amount of Rs 100 crore has also been sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Development Fund (CMDF) for the redevelopment of dairy colonies in Delhi, Gupta added.
