Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that her government will soon introduce a comprehensive modernisation plan for the city’s mandis, aiming to upgrade infrastructure and improve working conditions for traders and labourers.
During a visit to Azadpur Mandi in north Delhi on Friday morning, Gupta criticised the previous AAP government, alleging neglect and corruption in the management of mandis across the capital.
“There is an acute lack of basic facilities in the mandis. The previous government did nothing to improve the situation. Thousands of labourers and traders operate here, yet there is no cleanliness, no safety, and the infrastructure is crumbling,” Gupta told reporters.
She went on to allege that corruption had become entrenched in the mandi administration. “For the past 10 to 15 years, no substantial work has been done. These mandis have been reduced to ‘kooda ghars’ (dump yards). The ministers and chairmen under the previous regime turned them into hubs of corruption,” she charged.

Gupta said her government would prioritise improving security and basic amenities, including roads, washrooms, and storage facilities. “We will completely overhaul the facilities and ensure all forms of corruption are weeded out. New appointments will be made, and our minister is personally overseeing this initiative. This is just the beginning,” she added.
The chief minister was accompanied by Minister Kapil Mishra during the visit.
