Delhi leads states in most road fatalities in 2022: NCRB

The National Crime Records Bureau reported that in 2022, the highest number of road crash fatalities in India occurred in the national capital, with 2,103 individuals losing their lives. According to the ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022’ report, Delhi also recorded the highest number of road accidents in the country, totaling 5,387 incidents.

Among the 53 megacities examined, including Delhi, over-speeding was the primary cause of road accident deaths (51.5%), followed by dangerous or careless driving/over-taking (31.3%), and driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol (2.7%).

The data revealed that a total of 68,236 road accidents occurred across the country’s 53 cities in 2022, resulting in injuries to 57,246 people and the loss of 17,680 lives.

The NCRB report encompassed road accidents, railway accidents, and railway crossing accidents, identifying them as the primary contributors to accidental deaths. Of these, road accidents constituted 97.3% of the total accidents.

The majority of these road accidents happened near residential areas (29.1%), followed by industrial areas (9.7%), and areas surrounding educational institutions such as schools and colleges (8.7%).

Delhi also led the nation in railway accidents, accounting for 50.9% of the total mishaps reported in 2022, as highlighted in the report.
