The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, approved the creation of a new police station at Bijwasan Railway Station, on Wednesday, following the realignment of the Delhi Cantonment Railway Station.

Upon creation, the police station is slated to cater to 1.5 lakh people living in the area.

Presently, 13 Railway Stations fall under the Delhi Cantonment Railway Station, however, after the creation of the police station, three of them are slated to fall under the Bijwasan Railway Station. The railway stations Palam, Shahbad Mohammadpur and Bijwasan, having a total length of about 9 km, will come under its jurisdiction.

Both the Delhi Cantonment and Bijwasan Railway Stations are slated to fall under the sub-division of Old Delhi Railway Station.

The police station is expected to become functional in fairly short notice as soon as the Bijwasan Railway Station’s construction gets completed. It is slated to serve visitors from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, as well as the many long-distance trains that are slated to pass through the station. Owing to the importance of the railway station, Saxena highlighted that the station will require heavy policing due to the same.

There are 209 police stations in Delhi. In March this year, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved 66 new buildings and 77 new plots of land to boost the infrastructure of Delhi police.
