Delhi LG reviews women safety measures, directs enhanced police patrolling, security in parks

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday assessed women’s safety measures in the city and directed police to enhance patrolling and ensure regular interactions with the public.

In a meeting attended by senior officers, including Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, the LG directed Delhi Police to strengthen patrolling and visible policing, especially at vulnerable sites.

He also directed DDA, MCD and PWD to ensure adequate lighting, security personnel and secured boundaries and eliminate dark spots, said officers present in the meeting.

The LG issued instructions, especially to the police, to substantially and proactively increase on-ground engagement with students in colleges and schools, heads of institutions, and welfare associations of residents and markets, they said.

The interactive engagements should be at the level of DCPs, Additional DCPs, ACPs and SHO, the LG directed, pointing out that the feedback could help in addressing their concerns and needs.

Following the LG’s instructions, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) conducted a safety and security audit of parks maintained by it, covering 300 parks. The audit is expected to be complete this week, they said.

The LG directed heads of all agencies to personally inspect the big parks in their jurisdiction and directed that parks and public spaces must not be closed to citizens in the name of security, they said.

The Transport department was directed to secure its buses and other vehicles as directed earlier and provide for adequate lighting at bus stands, officers added.
