The national capital is likely to receive heavy rains on Tuesday, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD has issued an “orange” alert for Delhi, advising residents to be prepared. The minimum temperature recorded was 30.7 degrees Celsius, 2.8 notches above normal, with humidity at 76 per cent at 8:30 am. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 33 degrees Celsius.

Despite no rainfall on Monday, the IMD predicts moderate to heavy rains over the next two days, with a cloudy sky for the upcoming week. Heavy rain is defined as rainfall ranging between 64.5 and 124.4 mm in a day. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, 1.7 notches below the season’s average, and a minimum of 27.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.

In a post on X, private weather-forecasting agency Skymet said, ”

Rain and thunder showers are likely over Delhi and suburbs for the next 5-6 days. Intensity and spread of the activity is likely to be more today. Day temperatures are likely to dip to low 30’s during the week.”

The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday, more than three times the June rainfall average of 74.1 mm and the highest for the month in 88 years—since 1936. The IMD clarified that last week’s torrential rain was not a result of a cloudburst.

The IMD also released an advisory outlining the expected impact and suggested activities during the rainfall. Moderate rain is defined as rainfall between 7.6 mm and 35.5 mm in a day, and very heavy rain is defined as rainfall between 124.5 mm and 244.4 mm in a day. (With inputs from PTI)
