A 26-year-old man allegedly drowned while swimming in the pool of a private school in Najafgarh area of southwest Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Rahul Roy, a resident of Jharoda village in Delhi.

Police said information was received from Tarak Hospital about a man who had drowned while swimming at the pool of a private school in Najafgarh, after which a team rushed to the hospital.

During the preliminary enquiry, police found that Rahul had gone to the school’s swimming pool along with three friends — Suraj Singh, Tarun Kumar and Bhavishya — on Wednesday evening for bathing and swimming.

“He allegedly drowned in the pool at around 5.30 pm, following which his friends and others present at the spot rushed him to Tarak Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival,” a police officer said.

Investigators are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the drowning and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the swimming facility at the time of the incident.

According to police, Rahul was employed with a private company, where he was engaged in packing cardboard cartons.

The body has been shifted to the mortuary of Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital for preservation and a post-mortem examination.

Police inspected the swimming pool and the surrounding area soon after the incident. Statements of Rahul’s friends and others present at the spot are being recorded as part of the investigation.

According to police, they have registered an FIR under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway, police said.

No arrests have been made so far, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, police added.
