Delhi: Massive fire breaks out at Mayur Vihar cafe, adjoining shops gutted

A massive fire broke out at a cafe in Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, and spread to several shops on the upper floors of the building, officials reported on Monday.

The fire started at the cafe on the ground floor late Sunday night and quickly spread to the stores on the first and second floors, according to officials.

Although the fire is now under control, three to four fire tenders remain on site to complete the cooling process, a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said.

“We received a call about a fire at a cafe and a school uniform store at 11:40 pm on Sunday in Phase 2, Pocket B of Mayur Vihar,” the official said.

“We dispatched 25 fire tenders to the scene. One person was rescued from the building’s terrace,” he added.

Two brothers, Amar Preet Singh and Suman Jeet Singh, who own three shops on the first and second floors, had closed their stores at 9:30 pm and returned home, a police officer explained.

Around 11:30 pm, locals informed them about the fire in their shops, prompting them to alert the Pandav Nagar police station, the officer said.

No casualties have been reported so far, he added.

The fire began in the ground floor cafe and spread to the upper floors, he noted. The officer also mentioned that while the fire is under control, it has not been fully extinguished, and the cause remains unknown. (With inputs from PTI)
