A girl employed as a domestic worker was found hanging in the bathroom of her employer’s residence in Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi, an official confirmed on Thursday.

According to the police, there is conflicting information regarding the girl’s age. While her parents claim she was 17, her employers stated she appeared to be around 19 or 20. However, a preliminary medical examination suggests that she was approximately 14 years old.

The Vasant Kunj South Police Station received a distress call on Wednesday, following which a team was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the girl hanging from a shower pipe in the bathroom.

The deceased was a native of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and had been employed at the household for about one and a half months.

On Wednesday morning, she arrived at the house at around 8 am for work. She reportedly opened the door for the homeowner, Deepak (39), at around 4 PM when he returned. Later, Deepak, his wife, and their children went to rest.

At approximately 6 pm, the family’s cook arrived. When the girl failed to respond to the doorbell, Deepak’s wife opened the door and found the girl missing. After repeated knocking on the bathroom door went unanswered, they unlocked it with a key and discovered her hanging from the shower pipe.

The police were immediately notified, and the girl’s body was sent to Safdarjung Hospital for a preliminary medical examination. It is currently being kept in the hospital mortuary.

Inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) are ongoing, the officer added.

The police are in the process of verifying the girl’s age and other details as part of the investigation.
