Delhi Traffic Police have reported 71.59% increase in lane violations till June this year over the same period last year, sources have said.
The said violations have crossed 2,577 so far. In 2023, there were only 732 instances of lane violations during the same time frame.
The police officials have, however, highlighted that the increase has mostly been seen because of more proactive action taken by them.
A senior official highlighted that despite more offences noted in the first six months, regular commuters are still more inclined towards breaking the rules with impunity.
“Every day some body or the other breaks these rules, in the hope of running away from the due process of law. The number of instances which have been recorded for this year are of the ones who have been repeat offenders. The police personnel have been a bit more relaxed in the case of first-time offenders,” he said.
The Transport Department, through a 2022 directive, earmarked separate lanes for goods carriers and buses.

A vehicle flouting the norms would attract a fine of Rs 10,000, according to a Supreme Court order. Currently, the violator has to visit the local court to go through the process as required.
The police officials also highlighted that more stringent action is needed against such offenders in case of more such cases arise.
“There is a troubling rise in these numbers which may later cause some grievous injury to others. We are thinking of coming up with more stringent programmes to make drivers more careful regarding their on-road discipline. Presently, we are thinking of levying heavier fines,” said a senior official.
