Delhi experienced its highest-ever peak winter power demand on Monday morning, reaching a staggering 5,816 megawatts (MW) due to the relentless cold conditions, according to officials from the city’s distribution companies (discoms).

Previously, the winter records in Delhi were 5,798 MW on January 19, 5,726 MW on January 17, and 5,701 MW on January 12, with discoms estimating the peak power demand to be 5,760 MW. The power demand hit 5,816 MW at 10:52 am on Monday, marking the highest level in the city.

This occurrence marks the sixth time in January that Delhi’s winter power demand has exceeded last year’s peak of 5,526 MW recorded on January 6, 2023, as stated by officials.

A spokesperson for BSES mentioned that the discoms of BRPL and BYPL, both belonging to the company, successfully met the peak power demand, reaching 2,526 MW and 1,209 MW, respectively, without any disruptions.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) also reported meeting the highest winter peak power demand, which reached 1,826 MW in its distribution area of North Delhi, according to a company spokesperson.

Throughout this month, Delhi’s peak power demand has consistently remained above 5,000 MW, with only one exception, according to officials.

The BSES discoms are fully prepared to ensure a reliable power supply for nearly 50 lakh consumers and around 2 crore residents during the winter months, the spokesperson assured. Besides long-term agreements with power plants, more than 2,000 MW of green power is playing a crucial role in maintaining a reliable power supply to consumers.

The spokesperson highlighted the importance of advanced load forecasting, achieved through a combination of advanced statistical forecasting models using complex algorithms and cutting-edge weather forecasting solutions. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies further aids BSES discoms in efficiently meeting the power demand of Delhi.
