Delhi: Severe waterlogging, traffic jams across city after heavy rainfall

Rain drenched parts of the national capital on Friday afternoon, with the weather department forecasting more showers as the sky remained overcast.

Central and southern Delhi received rainfall during this period.

A yellow alert has been issued for the city, indicating adverse weather conditions that could worsen and disrupt daily activities.

The weather department’s latest nowcast predicted light to moderate rain at most locations in Delhi in the coming hours.

Late-night showers on Thursday caused waterlogging and heavy traffic jams in various areas of the city.

Following the rain, the minimum temperature dropped to 21.4 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal, according to the weather department.

Safdarjung, the city’s main weather station, recorded 29.6 mm of rainfall, while the Ridge station noted 69.4 mm, Delhi University 56.5 mm, Lodhi Road 28.2 mm, Aya Nagar 19.5 mm, and Palam 18 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Friday, as per data from the weather department.

The late-night downpour submerged several roads, leading to severe traffic congestion across the city.

To inform the public of traffic disruptions due to waterlogging, the police shared photos and videos, advising people to avoid affected areas and use alternate routes.

“Traffic is affected on NH-48 in the carriageway from Dhaula Kuan towards Mahipalpur due to waterlogging at GGR PDR. Kindly plan your journey accordingly,” the Delhi Traffic Police posted on X.

The police also reported traffic disruptions on several other roads, including Lala Lajpat Rai Marg (from Kalkaji to Defence Colony), Main Kanjhawla Road (from Budh Vihar to Puth Khurd), Outer Ring Road, Rohtak Road (from Nangloi to Tikri Border and vice versa).

MB Road (from Khanpur T-Point to Mehrauli and vice versa) and Guru Teg Bahadur Road (both directions from Ring Road to Patel Chest in front of Khalsa College) were also affected.

GTK Road experienced jams on both carriageways from Mukarba Chowk to Azadpur Chowk due to waterlogging near GTK Depot and Jahangirpuri Metro Station.

Main Outer Ring Road saw traffic delays from Bhera Enclave Roundabout to Peeragarhi, caused by waterlogging and sewer overflow near Nagin Lake Apartments, Peeragarhi.

“Kindly avoid Mundka and take alternate routes,” the police advised.

The humidity level was recorded at 96 per cent.

The India Meteorological Department predicted a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain during the day, with the maximum temperature expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius. (With inputs from PTI)
