Four people were crushed to death on Wednesday in North east Delhi’s Seemapuri area after a speeding truck ran over six people sleeping on the divider. Two were left critically injured.
The incident took place at 1:51 am near the DTC bus depot in Seemapuri.
According to the police, two of the six victims died on the spot while the other four were rushed to the GTB Hospital. One of them was declared brought dead, while another one died during treatment. Manish and Pradeep are currently struggling with the injuries.
“The people killed in this accident were identified as Kareem, Chhote, Shah Alam and Rahul”, a a police official said, adding that it happened in the middle of the night.
The bodies were found at the spot with an electric pole toppled on the ground. “The driver along with his truck fled the spot. However, police teams have been formed to trace the truck driver”, the officer stated.
Grish (name changed), who was one of the first people to encounter the bodies at the site of accident, said that the decreased presence of police and its lethargic behaviour has led to the increase of such cases. “If the police was doing its duty correctly, the driver would have been caught right after the incident or even before, if he was intoxicated or something”, he stated.
The police refrained from commenting on the allegations on their competence.
A sub-inspector, posted at the Seemapuri police station, has stated that the lack of footage and proper evidence to trace the truck and its driver has increased the problems.
With back-to-back cases of road rash and accidents, Delhi is witnessing an alarming rise in crimes.
On Tuesday, a Toyota Fortuner rammed into a number of parked vehicles on the road and dragged a man in his mid 20s to a distance of around 100 metres.
The cases of accidents and the number of deaths in such incidents have increased a lot in the past years. According to the data released by the Delhi police, there have been around 4,600 cases of road accidents in Delhi. Among these accidents, the most number of fatalities have been registered in the night time, while those in the day time are quite low in comparison.
Locals of the area have also alleged police inaction pointed fingers on the absence of police in the night time as a reason behind the increased accidents.
