Delhi: Tughlakabad Metro Station to be developed as inter-connectivity hub, says DMRC

Delhi: Tughlakabad Metro Station is being transformed into south Delhi’s new metro hub, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmere Gate-Raja Nahar Singh and Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridors, announced DMRC officials on Monday.

The existing station is being elevated while a new underground station is being constructed. A subway will link the two adjacent stations within the paid area, facilitating seamless transfers, officials explained.

“The redevelopment of Tughlakabad Metro Station into an interchange hub in Phase-4 will significantly improve connectivity between the Kashmere Gate–Raja Nahar Singh corridor (Line-6 violet) and the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor,” stated officials.

The new station is designed as a four-level underground structure, featuring platforms at a depth of approximately 23 meters, followed by a concourse and above-ground parking facilities. The station will accommodate around 250 vehicles with direct access via lifts, stairs, and escalators to both Violet and Silver Line stations.

Tughlakabad will be Delhi Metro‘s first interchange facility with underground parking, a feature currently only available at Dhansa Bus Stand on the Grey Line, officials said.

A 45-meter subway will connect the new and old Tughlakabad Metro stations, facilitating quick transfers between lines.

Additionally, officials highlighted that the terminal station of the new corridor will connect to the existing Sarita Vihar depot via a tunnel, which is being expanded to accommodate Silver Line trains.

Once operational, the new interchange will streamline travel for passengers from areas like Faridabad, allowing direct connections to the domestic airport and surrounding areas.

Currently, passengers from the Violet Line must transfer at the Central Secretariat to reach airport terminals, a journey that takes approximately 90 minutes.

Construction progress at the station is reported to be on track, with Tughlakabad poised to become south Delhi’s fourth interchange hub after Kalkaji Mandir, Lajpat Nagar, and Hauz Khas. This development is expected to significantly ease commuting for residents of Tughlakabad, Jasola, Sarita Vihar, Badarpur, and neighbouring areas, providing direct access to Indira Gandhi International Airport and its environs.

The Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor, featuring four elevated and 11 underground stations, including interchange stations at Aerocity, Chattarpur, Saket G, and Tughlakabad, is set to become a vital part of the DMRC network, officials concluded. (With inputs from PTI)
