Delhi witnesses widespread rainfall; waterlogging, traffic snarls in several areas

Widespread rainfall lashed Delhi on Wednesday, leading to traffic snarls and waterlogging in many areas, while the weather office issued yellow and orange alerts for various parts of the city, warning of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), between 8.30 am and 11.30 am on Wednesday, Safdarjung, the city’s base station, recorded 15.4 mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road received 26 mm. Ridge recorded trace rainfall during the period.

Areas including Vijay Chowk, Jantar Mantar, Kartavya Path, ITO, Mathura Road, Sangam Vihar, C R Park, Lodhi Road and several other localities recorded heavy rainfall.

Many commuters took to social media to complain about waterlogging in areas such as CR Park, Sangam Vihar, Lodhi Road and several other localities following the rain.

Traffic congestion was reported from several parts of the city, including the ITO-Mathura Road stretch, Safdarjung Enclave and the Nizamuddin-Ashram corridor, following the rain.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, Safdarjung recorded 10.8 mm of rainfall, Palam 8.3 mm, Lodhi Road 3.9 mm, Ridge 3 mm and Ayanagar 49.3 mm, the IMD said.

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Delhi between Wednesday and Thursday.
