Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has secured its place among the world’s top 10 busiest airports for 2023, landing at the tenth spot in a ranking led by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Airports Council International (ACI) World revealed this list, underscoring a significant global passenger forecast of close to 8.5 billion (850 crore) for 2023. This marks a notable recovery of 93.8 per cent from pre-pandemic levels and a 27.2 per cent increase over 2022.

The report highlights the convergence of international and domestic traffic recovery, vital for the industry’s revival and expansion.

With Delhi airport handling over 7.22 crore passengers in 2023, it maintained its position from the previous year, albeit slipping to tenth place from ninth.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its top position, managing over 10.46 crore passengers, followed by Dubai International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, with over 8.69 crore and 8.17 crore passengers, respectively.

Five out of the top 10 busiest airports are in the US, with London’s Heathrow Airport securing the fourth spot, followed by Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, Denver International Airport, Istanbul Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

ACI noted that these top 10 airports collectively represent nearly 10 per cent of global traffic, marking a 19.8 per cent increase from 2022 or a 0.7 per cent rise compared to their 2019 performance.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also led in terms of aircraft movements, solidifying its position as a global aviation hub.

ACI, serving as the trade association of the world’s airports, released this report, which includes emplaned and deplaned passengers, counting transiting passengers once.(With inputs from PTI)
